Destination Smart City
The Evolution of a Florida Town’s IT Infrastructure into the 21st Century
Situation.
Located in the center of Broward County, Florida, the Town of Davie is a full-service government municipality that operates its own:
-
Police Department
-
Fire Department
-
Water Utility
-
Various community parks
As a major city in Broward County, the Town serves a population of over 100,000 residents, while preserving greenspaces and offering a unique equestrian lifestyle.
The Challenge
The Town’s IT infrastructure had become outdated and was experiencing network connectivity and performance issues. With these challenges in mind, newly appointed CIO Nelson Martinez Jr. was tasked with refreshing the Town’s infrastructure using the latest technologies.
The Approach
To meet this goal, the Town decided to outsource the management of its IT network infrastructure, perimeter security, and voice network.
The IT Director turned to AIP US, leveraging the company’s proven experience in providing managed services for similar environments, including other South Florida cities and police departments.
The Solution Plan
With its deep technical expertise and strong track record working with local governments, AIP US collaborated closely with Davie IT to:
-
Establish a modernization plan
-
Build a Town-wide data network
-
Implement a security infrastructure tailored to the Town’s unique requirements and budget
Solution.
Assessment & Planning
AIP US began by conducting network and security assessments, providing detailed recommendations, designing a new architecture, and defining a migration path. With the critical 24x7x365 operations of the Police and Fire Departments in mind, AIP US and Davie IT developed a project schedule that ensured zero impact on daily operations.
Implementation
The new enterprise network and security/firewall environment was successfully deployed using Cisco-centric solutions, featuring an architecture that is:
-
Reliable
-
Scalable
-
Secure
-
Redundant
-
Highly available
AIP US performed failover testing to validate seamless operation across all critical network components.
Transition to Managed Services
Immediately following implementation, AIP US transitioned into “steady state” onsite managed services, covering:
-
Network operations
-
Perimeter security
-
Voice infrastructure
Since 2015, the AIP US team has worked side-by-side with the Town of Davie’s IT department, providing:
-
Day-to-day troubleshooting and issue resolution
-
Performance monitoring
-
Ongoing software/hardware maintenance and upgrades
-
Support for new projects and implementations
Emergency Response & Compliance
As part of the Town’s emergency response team, AIP US has helped safeguard IT assets during multiple hurricane seasons. Additionally, due to the modern network and security infrastructure investments, the Davie Police Department successfully passed FBI CJIS / FDLE audits—a major milestone and “win-win” for all parties involved.
Network Security Initiatives
Network security has been a top priority for the Town of Davie—as it has been for many public and private IT organizations—for several years. In response, AIP US assisted the Town of Davie in implementing a multi-vendor, layered security strategy that includes:
-
Intrusion prevention
-
Intrusion detection
-
“Zero-Day” malware detection services
This strategy also supports remediation activities as required, ensuring the Town’s IT infrastructure remains resilient and secure.
Station 86 – Fire Station & Community Center
Most recently, the Town of Davie IT Department began building out a state-of-the-art Fire Station and Community Center (Station 86). AIP US partnered with Davie IT to design and implement a robust architecture for this facility, which includes:
-
BGP Multi-homing Routing of Internet-facing traffic with two diversified ISPs
-
Provisioning of ARIN public IP address spaces to enable seamless routing, failover, and optimized connectivity
-
VXLAN capabilities to support proper replication of data and private Cloud infrastructure
This architecture ensures real-time replication, high availability, and seamless user access to mission-critical applications across the Town.
Leadership Perspective
Town of Davie CIO, Nelson Martinez Jr., shared:
“AIP US has played a critical role working with Davie IT since 2015, helping us establish a solid foundation as the Town embarks on various Smart City initiatives. Having a network and security architecture that can scale both ‘East–West’ and ‘North–South’ is critical to the long-term success of any Smart City program.”
He continued:
“AIP US works very well with the Davie IT organization. As a result, they have provided the Town of Davie with enterprise-wide, day-to-day operational support—as well as after-hours network support—that has been both cost-effective and extremely efficient.”
Business Result.
With the robust architecture implemented which included key design principles such as redundant and high-availability, security, and scalability, the Town has not experienced any network and security outage for the last five years – meeting and exceeding the expectations of the requirements set by the Town 5 years ago. AIP US continues to provide a solid IT foundation, share best practices and remain the go to technology partner for the Town of Davie. This partnership has allowed the Town to better serve its government operations, functions, and citizens.
